March, 2007 - ISSUE #5

Where will we be selling our produce this year?

We will be selling most of our produce at the Northern Kentucky regional Farmers' Market, in Covington, KY (at the MainStrausse area downtown).

Not only will we be selling produce, but many of our value added products will be available for sale there, as well. Things like goat milk soap, lipbalms, lotion bars and goat milk lotions and candles.

We will still be offering farm shares, where you can purchase a "share" of the produce (single person and family-sized shares will be available). We recommend that you fill out a questionaire, so we know if there is anything you would like us to grow for you. We will be growing several items, like broccoli, lettuces, spinach, cucumbers, melons, beans (various), tomatoes and other items. If we don't get any response to farms shares, we will sell our produce at the farmers markets on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Kidding season has started, with the last doe due in late April. In fact, the newsletter is out late since we were "babysitting" Betsy, our Nubian that was due to kid first! She finally had twins this morning, Monday, March 5th. You can see her babies here. We will soon be milking 3 goats, with 2 more on board for April!
With that, comes the addition of several more stalls for goats, and that means expanding the barn.

Honey bees dead in 22 states
It seems that 50% of the bees in bee hives from 22 states across the U.S. have died this year. It appears to be a type of immune deficiency. Currently, I do not know if my hives have been affected, since the weather has been so cold I could not open my hives to take a look. I will do so at the first opportunity. In the meantime, a long-time beekeeper I know has recommended feeding our bees sodium chloride (table salt) as a preventive measure. I will report more information as it becomes available.

To your Health,
PWeber
