Food, Health and Farming News

What is "eating local"?
Eating local is a philosophy. It is a choice. it is also a way to eat healthier. It is a means to economically, physically and emotionally support your local communities and farmers. By purchasing your eggs, butter, cheeses, meats, grains and produce from a local producer, you put money back in your community and give your local producers a sense of accomplishment. You also take dollars out of the pockets of New Zealand, South America, China, and other foreign countries, and make a "No vote" with your dollars to the importation of foods - a vote that eventually will find its way to the offices of our political and economic leaders in this country.

From the Barnyard

A heart to heart chat from the farm
You probably envision us as simple people, getting up every morning to feed animals, weed garden beds, water, harvest crops, tend the bees, and go to bed.
For any of you that have actually spoken with us, you know that I work outside the home, and do the rest of this during my "off hours". You will also know that I give all of the glory to my lovely wife and sons, who are there all day doing the work while I sit at my desk job.
We work hard at the farm, sometimes day and night, but definitely every day. Why do we do it? Is it because we love animals? The smell of the hay? Are we avid gardeners? Do we want to get rich?
Th answer is 'yes' and 'no'.
The tide rushes in with a list of undone items to be completed before the season changes. The weight of stress, caused by not enough time to get them all done, and the physical exhaustion from pushing too hard, all take their toll.
When the day is done, we count our blessings for what we were able to do, and pray for strength to get the rest finished on time. We are always playing catch up, and, at times, it seems that we never get our heads above water.
But we have some healthy food we have grown ourselves and customers that are becoming friends, all telling us "your lotion is so wonderful" - or - "your eggs taste so goood!". We have soaps, lotions, shampoos, and other items we have made from the by-products of our little farm, and we have a sense of self-sufficiency that keeps us going. So we press on... for our sake, our children's sake, and for your sake.

To your Health,
